Start at bedtime, not the pool photograph
At eight in the evening, a child wants the lights out while two adults would like to talk, read, or plan tomorrow. That ordinary scene is often the deciding factor between a hotel and an apartment. A hotel may solve breakfast and late arrival beautifully. An apartment may provide a separate sleeping space and a table. Neither label guarantees the arrangement a family of three needs.
Draw your evening on paper. Where will the child sleep? Can adults use the bathroom without crossing that sleeping space? Is there a door between the bedroom and living area? Where do coats, luggage, and wet swimwear go? A stylish open-plan studio can offer less usable privacy than a plain hotel room with a well-positioned alcove.
Compare the same complete stay
Enter two adults and the child's actual age for identical dates, then compare the final checkout totals. Cleaning fees, breakfast, parking, local charges, and cancellation conditions can reverse the apparent price difference. For rentals, read the individual listing's rules and cancellation terms. Airbnb's accommodation cancellation policy guidance explains why the policy attached to a booking matters; do not assume all apartments share one deadline.
| Need | Hotel advantage to verify | Apartment advantage to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Late arrival | Staffed desk and luggage help | Reliable self check-in |
| Evening separation | Suite or confirmed layout | Bedroom with a real door |
| Meals | Breakfast with useful hours | Working kitchen and nearby shop |
| Short stay | Simple checkout | Fees spread over enough nights |
A kitchen is valuable when you will use it. If every morning starts with an early train, buying groceries and washing dishes may add work without improving the trip. Likewise, a hotel breakfast is useful only if the hours, food, and included guest count fit your household.
Ask about the unphotogenic details
For a hotel, confirm the third sleeping surface, bed dimensions, setup timing, and any supplement. A room that permits three occupants may still require a sofa bed request. Our triple-room checklist gives you specific questions to send before paying.
For an apartment, ask which floor it occupies and whether a lift reaches that floor without additional stairs. Check heating or cooling arrangements for the season, window coverings, nighttime noise, and the practical route from public transport. A washer is more useful when drying is also realistic. Do not assume a balcony is a suitable place to dry clothing or that its access arrangement meets your household's needs.
Read recent reviews for recurring details rather than relying on a headline score. Repeated comments about key collection, street noise, or an uncomfortable third bed deserve a question. A single complaint may reflect one guest's preferences; several consistent observations can reveal a mismatch with your own plans.
Use a simple decision rule
For a two-night city break with late arrival and most meals out, start by comparing a correctly configured hotel room. For a longer stay with laundry, quiet evenings, and several breakfasts at home, put a genuine one-bedroom apartment on the shortlist. These are planning starting points, not rules about which style is better.
Build an example total from quoted prices: nightly rate multiplied by nights, compulsory fees, breakfasts you will purchase, parking, and likely transfers. Add the cost of reaching the sights from each property. A cheaper apartment outside the center can consume the difference in daily journeys for three.
Be cautious about paying for a refundable option without reading when that flexibility ends. Save the confirmation and the property's written answers together. If your flight lands late, connect the accommodation choice to our first-night arrival plan. A beautiful room is not useful if access depends on a key handover that finishes before you arrive.
Questions that settle the shortlist
Does a separate bedroom justify a higher rate? It can, particularly across several evenings, but compare the actual floor plan. A door and a usable living area matter more than the word suite or apartment.
Should we choose daily cleaning? Consider the length of stay and how much time you will spend inside. Some families prefer hotel service; others value fewer interruptions. Verify what is included rather than assuming daily service from the property type.
Can booking direct save money? Sometimes the total or conditions differ. Compare matching room categories and terms through official booking channels, then choose the arrangement you can understand and document.
